Thing is, Twitter/FB lack depth - everybody wants to talk about everything, all the time - with the result that you're too busy reading other people's updates, providing your own on a variety of topics, without ever achieving any meaningful discussion. Yes, they killed forums, and also blogs to quite an extent - but when we really need depth we all come out of FB and look for the "Real" places!

I think that many of the wishy woshy membershipt that have left the forums for this were the "hit and run" types anyways. I have not seen a big fall off of membership that chatted and discussed things, what we dont see is the post and forget kinds that would read a thread, make a post and vanish for months on end.
Personally I see it as a weeding out process that has evolved and now we see who the members are that we need and like to interact with and the other group members that just kind of hung out when they had nothing else to do. Those that post here and stick it out tend to be those that have something to share and I truely enjoy reading.

I also think that we (and most other forums that I view) have suffered to a large extent of having "said it all". That's a bit of an exageration obviously but there is a natural curve to these things and I think we are on the downward side of the slope and have probably leveled out. There will still be a bit of interaction but without someone making the effort of actively driving discussion (and to be fair most of us are responders unless something rattles our cage ) then I suspect we'll all just bubble along.

I agree with Bob, It's hard to find anything that hasn't been said before. I read forums most days but rarely feel I have anything constructive to say. But Istill prefer them to anything on FB.

another factor that drives or holds back the amount of flow and conversation is our approach to conversing in a respect filled way. I visit a few forums and find that the less respectful forums tend to blow up weekly with Personal attacks and other crap that end up becoming a school yard showdown of dramatic proportion on a weekly basis.
While we are a bit more quiet we also tend to be a lot more respect filled with only a few incidents each year! I prefer a quiet forum with some respectful chat to a heavy handed forum with rules that are assessed only to a few individuals and or a drama filled forum.
