This is really hard to say as there are so many things that can effect it. How big is the hernia and good is the person doing the op.
So if everything goes well it varies 6 to 12 weeks. obviously if you start training before it heals you can make it worse. Perhaps the doctor is the best person to ask as he knows what he is looking at.
Pelvic floor exercises might help.

Hi Derek
Is it a groin, hiatus or lateral ventral hernia?
I have the last two and things are stable at the moment, touch wood.
Speak with the surgeon and explain that you do karate and ask what type of light exercise is appropriate.
Best Regards Allan

Good luck 'D'! I go in for hip replacement on 3/17/14, St. Paddy's Day! I'm hoping I can still train after re-hab.

All the best, Derek, Tom, I hope you return to training fitness soon, and will await your posts on this forum with updates! ______________ The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in battle.
