I can't stand it when Karate instructors with decades of TRADITIONAL Karate training under their belts (Gohon Kumite, Kata, Kihon etc) and are perfectly happy, suddenly get bitten by the UFC bug and start going "This wouldn't work in the street" "That wouldn't work in the ring" "Gohon Kumite is unrealistic" etc etc.
What things don't YOU like ?

You did ask Number one, closed minds! I hate it when people of what ever level of experience just adopt the whole "la, la, I'm not listening" approach when anybody questions their pre-conceived notions of how things are/should be (be that "traditional", MMA or any other "street lethal" martial art fad). I understand what you mean however, I've seen many fall from the traditional (what ever that means) path and just swap one set of false idols for another without getting the idea is what they really need is a self critical, questioning and open mind (and a clear idea of what they are training for in the first place). I hate it that instructors can have "decades of traditional karate training" and still not have any real idea of the what and how of what they do, they just parrot what they were shown when they were students. I hate it that the only reason (that I can see) for some kata to be "senior grade" only is that if they weren't you'd know as much as we do. I hate it that kata is taught to be "just so" but nobody can tell you why, and then it suddenly changes to "oh, we hold our hand at this (slightly different) angle now" and still no body can tell you why but they can tell you that if you don't change you are "doing it wrong" despite it having been acceptable for the last 25 years! (I have been told that clever people have done research and decided on this change to "better suit the application" but then nobody can ever tell you what that application is!) I hate people who teach "traditional" karate and tell their students they are learning "self defence" I hate people who teach grappling and submission techniques as the "ultimate street fighting art" I hate people who've worked the doors for a while telling you that your training is bullsh*t if you haven't I hate it that karate is so widely seen as a children's activity (to clarify, I don't have a problem with children learning BUT karate has become something that only small children do in the public mind). I could go on (and probably will at some point )

I hate it that this forum is not more active I hate it that it's so difficult to tuck in ones legs while doing the Enpi jump - i'm able to do the turning OK, but in the process the feet just go off the ground, without any tucking! I hate it that Kagawa Sensei's cool video tutorial on YouTube is only available in Japanese... I hate it that Abernethy's Bunkai book does not cover a few FULL sample kata's I hate it that high-quality ready-made nunchaku's and do-gi's are so difficult to procure in India! (yes they're available off-the-shelf, but if you want any quality, you land up getting something made) ______________ More sweat in training, less blood in battle

T.B.H. I bought Kagawa sensei's DVD even though I'm not a Japanese speaker, I've found the physical demonstrations to be so clear and self explanatory that the language barrier wasn't an issue, it's one of the best technical works I've seen on DVD.

I fully agree - it is a masterwork of detail! I similarly found Tanaka's Kumite tutorial to be very useful as well. And Bob, so rightly said - I hate it that Karate is so popularly conceived as a children's fitness fad! ______________ More sweat in training, less blood in battle

Actually it had been a long time since I'd last watched it, if you buy the DVD it does come with an English language option.

Wow that's great! My purchased library is currently just books - any inputs about what DVD's are the MOST essential? ______________ More sweat in training, less blood in battle

I hate it that Abernethy's Bunkai book does not cover a few FULL sample kata's ... and I love it that the rest of the applications are available for free on youtube .. :-)

Although if you spend any time with Iain, you'll know that he isn't really teaching "applications" (as I know Tom knows ) but the combative principles behind those applications so you don't really need a catalogue. He's not the only "applied" guy out there BTW so look around for other ideas, there's some good stuff out there IF you keep a critical mind (although I'd avoid anything that includes guys in camouflage Gi's )

I hate it when seniors who have been around for a life time act like children...I hate it when I cant act like a child and get away with it (Damn you wife!).
I hate it when you join an organization and they tell you everything you were doing before is wrong!
I hate it when you want to do some competitions and then when you visit one you see what they are doing and think "I miss the old days".
I hate it when you look at the new "Sport Karate" and think "HOLY POOP ITS TAE KWON DO" and then have to slap yourself cuz that sounds really style-phobic towards TKD.

I get the impression that a lot of "old school" TKD people feel the same about what's happened to their art.

When someone tries to validate karate with a PHd,next thing you'll be saying that the world is not flat.
