There is a bit of debate at my club regarding Gohon Kumite (five step sparring) You have an aggressor and a defender. After the defender has performed their Gyaku Tsuki, who steps forward - the aggressor or the defender ?

The way I was taught (when I still did Gohon) was aggressor steps back and the defender forward.

Concur with Bob - this is how we do it as well in SKIF. In gohon, as well as in sanbon, once the forward steps are complete, the attacker steps back into normal stance, while the defender steps forward. This is an exception, though; in normal kihon drills, no matter what you just finished doing, you would always step back at Yame. ______________ More sweat in training, less blood in battle

We teach it that the defender steps away, continuation of the defending oneself I suppose.

I do it the way the other person wants to do as long as we agree, as I find a punch in the mouth can cause offence.
