I know belts don't really matter but I just want to know what the real belt system of the official shotokan karate of today. All the sites about shotokan karate seem to have different colors and even the shotokan karate dojos I attended didn't agree with each other. Is there even a belt system or do they just make it up as long as they follow the syllabus. So does anyone have an official link to what the shotokan karate belts should be and thanks ?

If you read back it was White Brown Black then they started adding colours. So if JKA is the one you consider to be the main one then theirs would be the colours you would follow. 1977 SKI was formed and there seems to be an endless list of Shotokan organisations. I always liked purple. www.shotokankaratecalgary.com/ranks.php this one is clear and has a nice tiger.

Hi and welcome to the group. Please don't forget one of the rules of the forum is that you post under your own name so please update the signature in you profile to include this. As for there being an "official" belt colour list this would mean that there would have to be an "official Shotokan" which there isn't Many of the large groups will tell you they are the "official" version but they are all just variations on a theme, the syllabus also varies to a greater of lesser degree from group to group so just pick one that suits you and stick with it. If you want to relate one to another then forget the colours and go with the numbers (although good luck with getting consistency with that as well )
