There are many things needed to create the synergistic process that results in a consistency that will produce a stream of wins against top level competitors again and again and again. over the years i have heard people attribute Frank Brennans success to his 'physical build and suppleness'. now, whilst acknowledging that Frank's physical gifts were a sound springboard for him, those whom think that this was 'it' quite simply (IMHO) just don't get it. watch him fight in this series of clips. his spirit, focused attention, timing, sense of spatial awareness, amazing speed and ability to use a wide array of techniques (both singularly and in combination) and his phenominal accuracy are extraordinary. a true master of Shiai Jo Kumite. i strongly recommend that you save this and watch it again and again - it is amazing if you really know what to look for. enjoy www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7oh02Z59Ocwould love to hear peoples comments. don't just visit - join in please - pretty please etc!

IMHO, Tokey Hill is a good comparison. Tokey competed in the same AAU events that I did. In 1980, he made history in Madrid, Spain, by being the first American to ever win the WKF World Championships. Frank would have been Frank in any venue, IMHO.
Thanks, Tom

Now that is the dyanamic tag team if I ever saw one. you guys in England are so spoiled. So many people that have a rich back ground and have really pushed to broaden the style. Lucky buggers. We have our own versions of them...but not as well known and dont move about as much. After all England has so many people and can fit into the lake just above winnipeg. for a canadian instructor to travel could take days of driving or a long plane ride, a British instructor a mear few hours driving.....so so Green with envy right now!!!!!

I'd be pleased to coordinate things at this end and you could visit various areas of the UK and enjoy training with some excellent instructors. let me know I would love it, I will ask a few buddies if they would be in for a trip to the "home land" and go for a bit of a Karate voyage to England. Wont be in 2011, but perhaps in 2012. Family issues are still pretty fresh and need attention right now. Daughter is disabled and we have a few genetic things we are dealing with! oh and who are your top guys? I would bring my instructors son, my instructor wont go on a plane that long, being 71 he hates to travel...never did much like the plane. Brian Dingman, Del Philips maybe and a few other top guys would be an interesting exchange. All for fun and all that! Canada has a lot of great Karate people, we just dont have the chances to show our skills and our ability as we are so darn far appart. oh and whats this drivvle about some lake GB is the largest country in the world mate = fact. just the maps that are wrong thats all my mistake! I was talking about England the island...not the common wealth however.

sorry james - yer misunderstood me - when i said who are your top guys I meant the Canadian Instructors you spoke of earlier. I asked because we may well know of them. ALthough I haven't been to Canada - some friends have and all speak well of the Karate they found over there.

here is one of the top current day fighters - he is clearly fast and has a wide array of techniques but there is something missing (not in him just in the way the sport has become) I thought about it and the one thing i came up with is: when you watch the vid above and then watch this - the first looks and feels very dangerous - this to me doesn't. yes injuries could occur in either but i hope you get what i mean. enjoy www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_cUqYykAuM&feature=related
