Just thought I'd share my org's course report on a session they had with Kanazawa - a bit odd in that they were using Bo. Anywho, just thought I'd share - and boy is Kanazawa starting to look old... www.skc-england.co.uk/skce/20101121_news.html

Alex, can you type in the address for the course report. The SKI has been promoting Kanazawa No Bo, so I assume that they were working on this. Also I`m sure that we will all look aged as we approach 80 ( 78?). Osu Paul B

It's there now, my bad :S I was probably caught up wondering why on earth he's allowing himself to be called Kancho... However good he is, "Kancho" just bears to many connotations of McDodjo 50 thousand dan "black belts" that wear rainbow coloured gis :/ I know it's not really my place to moan about someone who is not only significantly better than me, but also who has done so much for karate, but I can't help but feel that the title 'Kancho' is just a little bit too much...

Gentlemen - you know without doubt I am not one to stand on ceremony and I WILL not show respect just because someone is Japanese but tread lightly here Gentlemen This is Master Kanazawa you speak of and many would be upset (read angry) if he was not afforded the total respect he has undoubtedly earned.
it would be a shame if this site gained a reputation of being occupied by individuals (claiming to be Shotokan Karateka ) whom do not KNOW about Kanazawa Sensei and his massive contribution to Shotokan Karate worldwide.
In my opinion - if Kanazawa Sensei had taken over the head of the JKA position when Nakayama Sensei passed, Shotokan worldwide would be far less divided than it currently is. (there where rumours that Nakayama Sensei Himself desired this.
So please chaps - speak from knowledge of the man afore you cause upset.
just giving you a heads up chaps!

Steve, you are so right! In so saying, even though I had already mentioned that I hold Master K in the highest regard, I think it would be best to delete, the reference to a certain definition. I did so to my post. I wonder if maybe, Alex could I ask you to do the same on the quote to the wikipedia. Thank you. Osu Paul B

KANCHO is just another honorary title meaning the president/chairman of an organisation, awarded by other members of his organisation .Whatever title/dan grade someone has, doesn't concern me but I'm sure I(and many others) can learn a lot from him 80years old ,kancho ,hanshi whatever or not .....

I think my problem is that although I respect him immensely for how he has affected karate and for his level of mastery in it, I think that any kind of 'title' just brings politics into the game innately. I just don't think that there should be anything beyond Sensei, Sempai, and Kohei when we aren't speaking to each other on a first name basis. Otherwise we start judging people on there titles and not their karate itself, which I think can be very dangerous... That's not to say that I don't greatly respect the man though ^__^ His Jitte is just *drools endlessly with longing and admiration* edit. argh I just remembered that I've banned myself from facebook so that I don't get distracted now that I have exams - I'll have to wait a month or so...

No worries Alex, tis just that Kanazawa Sensei is (deservedly) held in the highest esteem by all Shotokan Karateka (of knowledge) and as this site is now gaining a good reputation as the new friendly and informative Site it has become and is drawing the attention that Dod, Liam and Kim wanted it to have, it would be sad indeed if somebody misinterpretated your comment.
those of us whom know you and have trained with you know fully that you are a fine young karateka with a VERY inquiring mind who would not purposely be disrespectful tis sorted - so go study about Kanazawa Sensei - you will learn a great deal indeed.

@alex, Simply drop the title then and look at what the MAN has done and his Karate. For a 80 year old man...first off...he is a marvel! Simply a great Karate man, and the amount of things he has done for the style world wide can not go unnoticed, even by those young and not as in tune with the past. Kanazawa is a pillar of Shotokan, while he is not JKA anymore he has done so much for the style that his efforts earn him the restpect that we give him. Nuff said!
