several weeks ago, I woke up, after a hard day at work the previous day, with a very painful foot. It was not after a training night and I could not remember any particular trauma. So off i went to work, limping badly and unable to roll my foot forward. It got steadily worse and I manfully ignored it best I could and continued teaching class three times a week and going to work in the vain hope it would get better. It didnt quel surprise! so after 3 weeks I gave in and went to the docs. I could not get in to see my regular doctor and and saw a locum who prodded it and asked if it hurt. he advised it could be gout and if it got worse I should go back. Less than happy with this I did my usual trick of , rather than getting a second opinion, just ignoring it again. It did not get better. 6 weeks later i went back and saw my own doc who gave me a blood test and sent me for x-rays. turns out to be a stress fracture of the second meta-tarsal. as I had left it so long they can do nothing but give pain relief and as resting it is not an option it is taking an age to heal. As I have already stated, I am an old fool!

Jim don't be so hard on yourself. Nobody likes to go to the doctor. A friend of mine said the same thing to me today. He felt miserable for 2 weeks. He finally went to the doctor, got some medicine & felt better the next day. ;D I went to the doctor. He told me I had water on the knee. I said I wanted a second opinion. He said OK your'e ugly too! ;D Thanks, Tom

Years ago my wife had a similar fracture, caused by slipping off of a step and going down to the next step bellow. Being just a crack they could do nothing for it, immobilizing just wouldn`t work & like Jim staying off of it wasn`t an option. It bothered her for quite some time. I`m sure your `kiai` will be good & loud for a while. Hope it heals soon. By the way Tom. Your doctor knows his stuff! ;D Osu Paul B

can not count the number of times I did not go to a doc and should have...thinking my education and practice could help and would tell me what to do...or better yet...before univeristy I thought I knew my body and could figure out what to do. Years ago I broke my ankle (the actual bones in the lower leg not the joint) and walked on it for month! Then I went to a doctor and he told me that I broke it and casted me up. He told me 2 months in a cast, 2 months on crutches after that and no Karate for about 6 months total......three weeks later I cut the damn thing off myself and went back to Karate with aself taped ankle....been paying for it ever since! Take the time to heal and work on other things...Lay down and do some crunches or push ups!

Jim = you are nowhere near the fool i have been - about five yrs ago i had to have my right foot completely rebuilt due to multiple small fractures (some decades old that had healed badly due to lack of medical attention - I know have 16 pins in the foot and no sense of touch in about 2/3 of it - go to the doctor everyone!

I probably qualify for being the biggest 'old fool'. I posted that we did gedan barai Tues. nite for half an hour. Well we also did the blocking exercise we call 'human makiwara'. Many schools do it in all sorts of different combinations. Basically you just bash your forearms on each other. When my wife saw it (the black & blue arms) on Saturday she said "Your'e crazy for what you do". On Thurs. nite we rolled. I grappled with my son Mikey who out weighs me by 50 lbs. & is half my age. I stuffed his first takedown & then I took him down but I wound up in his gaurd & then he mounted me. Basically he twisted me into a pretzel. I rolled with a kid 20 yrs. old. I am 3X his age. Someday I will probably be in line for the doctor but so far I have been able to dodge the bullet. ;D Thanks, Tom

I was chatting with a student of mine many years ago and he said something that will stick with me forever...
He said..."Sensei getting old is inevitable....growing up is an option!"
Wise words from a seven year old. I did not know what inevitable was till I was nineteen!
