If you use Mikazuki Geri (Crescent Kick) as a block to, say, Chudan Oi Tsuki, what is it called ? Mikazuki Uke doesn't sound quite right !

LMAO, No it does not! But it is a great technique. I used it to kick students while sparring who are coming close in and think they got me because they are to close. I once winded a guy that was not ready with it.

Hi Andy - Taking Ashi Bo Kake Uke as a starting point - I assume it would, or could - be termed Mikazuki Ashi Uke but i am not sure sorry mate
BUT - why don't you pose it as a question for Yokota Sensei in his interview pt 3.

Does it need another name? If I use age-uke as a forearm smash to the throat does it matter if I call it by another name? how about using uchi-uke as an arm breaker? If we get bogged down in the literal translations of all the alternative uses for the same technique we would need to learn Japanese as a second language!

kinda see yer point Jim but the intent is by learning the japanese vocabulary for karate it allows a class to be taught and understood anywhere in the world - a little like the way mass used to be said in latin. when you teach abroad it is especially helpful - Scotland in particular LOL
seriously - it does help when language barriers exist.

Absolutely, I think knowing the Japanese for a technique and its literal meaning can be enlightening, I just think regardless of how the technique is utilised it is enough to know one name so we can recognise "the shape " of the technique. what you use it for is immaterial. Inmho
