I had a new lad come along to the class this morning with his mother to see if it was ok for him to have a go, (Saturday mornings is pretty much totally a kids class), so did what I normally do and just got him to join in on the end of the line and have a try.
He did ok for a first ever try and seemed to want to come back so I had the chat with his mum who then said "by the way he's a haemophiliac, perhaps I should have mentioned it earlier"
His parents are quite keen for him to be involved in something physical. His dad apparently used to train and got to black belt and would like him "to do some boys stuff", not quite sure how I feel about that (to be fair I have not met the man so may just be reading that the wrong way). But I suppose a karate dojo is a lot more controlled environment than most physical activities he could take up and if his father used to train he must be aware of what's involved.
The risks are small in the kids training but there are always the occasional knocks that come from a bit of over enthusiastic blocking etc.. I've told his mother that, now I am aware of the issue, I can keep a particular eye on things and be very selective on who I partner him with and that (although we don't normally use them) that it might be worth him training in elasticated shin/forearm protectors for any partner work.
I was just wondering if anybody has any direct experience in dealing with a student with haemophilia and, realistically, how far they can take it?
Many thanks in advance.
