Some people have a misconception about the meaning of control, so it would be good to open up a discussion about this topic and find out everyones view piont on this matter. How do you interpret it, use it and develop it

Crikey Geaorge - good shout but i think you just opened up a five year thread.
but to be clear are you asking about personal self control or control of technigues so the find the target but don't do damage - sundome?

Well Steve, we'll just put it two categories. 1) Personal Control 2) Control of Technique A wise man said to me that control is what you perceive it to be given the circumstances you find yourself in, so it should be practiced at all levels, or something like that

thanks for the clarification
here is my broad thinking on it
they are separate but intimately intertwined areas of study. one cannot follow without the other.
I know immediately when someone does not have either set of skills when you here things like - 'Well, if you train to control techniques you won't know how to hit in a real situation!'
absolute poppycock!
the ability to consistently deliver a fast and accurate technique to within millimeters of a moving target is an exercise in 'Precision' and when really studied is a massively complex subject that - once mastered - not only allows you to be 'in control' and hit as hard or as gently as you wish but is also an exercise in displaying ASK!
Attitude Skills Knowledge
I personally believe control is the key to achieving true karate BUT i fully accept it is a very hard thing to master and therefore should be a massive part of training from day one.

And I suppose that in developing your attitude, skill and knowledge you also grow in confidence therefore giving you spirit/heart, the list goes on. So with control having such a wide spectrum i.e. from sundome (stopping just that moment before) to total follow through, what can we do (training ways) to insure that we can deliver the proper control at all of these different levels

this may sound cryptic to many George but you know it cannot be explained in print and needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated - Simple but hugely educational exercise that needs development at each stage but starts with:

Buy a tennis Ball and some strong string! Heard about this a few times from people who have attended your training Steve and I guess I can think of the uses ( target training etc) but it would be great if someone could post a video. Those of us living way down south without the opportunity to train with you would then maybe have a better idea of its usage...
