One training exercise that I enjoy doing with my students is a drill that I learned as `star formation`. I`m sure that most of you do this drill or a close variation of it & I was just wondering if you call it by the same name? The drill can be used with pretty well any technique or stance or combination for that matter.. For simplicity, I`ll explain using age uke in zenkutsu dachi. Start in shizen tai, go to left leg forward zenkutsu & left arm age uke, return. Now go right leg forward right arm blocking. This was 12:00 oclock. Now step left 45 degrees to about 10:00 oclock & left arm blocking, return. Now step right about 2:00 oclock with right arm blocking. Next is 6:00 oclock, step back right leg with left arm block, if each move is one count this is `go` so `kia`, return. Then left leg back for the right arm block, return. Now pull the left leg back while turning your body, the left leg steps back to 4:00 oclock, right arm blocks. then step the right leg back to 8:00 oclock & left arm blocks, return to shizen tai. now we step left leg out to 9:00 oclock & left block. Lastly we step to the right 3:00 oclock, with right arm blocking, this count is `ju`, so`kiai`. Return & start over. Like I said I`m sure that you all do this, I was just wondering what you call it. I like this drill as a way to start familiarization of using angles. Osu Paul B

A very good example of the fact that Shotokan Karate DOES NOT have to be practised on tram lines! Nice one Paul a very good exercise that can be adapted to suit all grades not just beginners.
Dancers do similar to learn directional balance.

Hey Paul,
We learned this training drill from Yaguchi Sensei 20 years ago, we call it "Karate-grams" it is actually really fun and we do them at most classes. it can be a great work out and alot of fun....even with kids....we get them going so fast that they tend to fall alot...great fun!

It gets really fun when you get the speed up & you count with the pace of the fastest person.

Crikey Paul, you need a 'Star' just for explaining that one. What a mouth fall, but explained beautifully.
