Must haves in my opinion. Dynamic Karate `Nakayama`, Karate-Do Kyohan & Karate- Do Nyumon `Funakoshi`. Must, must, must have Karate-Do My Way Of Life ( this one is cheap, no excuse not to buy it) Also what are the next few kata are you wanting to learn , get them in the best karate series. Eventually you will be like most of us i`m sure & have the whole 11 book set!! Alex if you plan on being a true karateka, this is a life long journey & even though some of these books might seem a little pricey, remember that they are text books not a pocketbook novel & the years of enjoyment & reference use that you will get from them will justify their cost. Store them in a fashion that you intend to keep them for life. Wise investments, IMHO... Osu Paul B

I just got back home; I did get Nakayama's 'Dynamic Karate', and having looked through quickly on the train, I can tell that it's going to be ridiculously useful!
Thank you for the advice everyone! ^__^

Nice one Alex and Paul's advice is spot on. I also suggest that you very neatly write your name, current grade and date of purchase neatly and discretely inside the cover so when you are a sixth Dan you can show it to your kids and say 'when I wer't lad this was what we called a Book, we didn't have hologram displaying pocket computers back then!' LOL
Read the book very carefully and i suggest that you paperclip sheets of A4 inside for you to write notes upon. You will find that as your experience grows you will go back and re-read a section and get something different from it than you did previously.
Enjoy Lad - part of me envies you and the fantastic journey you are now embarked upon.
Safe journey lad - its one hell of an experience I can tell you.
Osu!

This maybe a little late now, (the thread started on March the third, 2011, and it is now Sunday, the 18th December 2011!!), but i too have a copy of Dynamic Karate by Sensei Nakayama. I have had this book for almost 15 years and in the period when i did not physically study this art, (for many and varied reasons), i read from it frequently. I also have another book that some on the site maybe interested in too: 'The Beginner's Guide To Shotokan Karate-Beginner To Black Belt. The author is John Van Weenen. A student of Kanazawa Sensei, Mr Van Weenen was, in 1983, a 7th degree Black Belt, and was Chief Instructor for the Traditional Association Of Shotokan Karate. He also wrote three other books did Mr Van Weenen: Advanced Shotokan Kata. Task-Force Albania, and Task-force Albania, the Kosovo Connection. In the early 90's, Mr Van Weenen found himself leading the largest convoy of humanitarian aid to leave the UK since World War Two. His route lay through war torn Jugoslavia, to the tiny country of Albania, whose citizens were dying of starvation under Communist oppression. Using almost everything he had ever learned in his near 30 years of practising Karate Do, and with a loyal team behind him, the aid finally got through to the peoples of Abania.......without any form of physical violence whatsoever. Sensei John Van Weenen truely has found ''The Way''. Mikky.
