quick one: who of you still train Jiin? After my hiatus I am working through all the kata and learnt this week that JKA have dropped it from the syllabus I always really enjoyed it and will continue using in it in my repertoire but was wondering if anyone knew the details of why it was dropped...

Funny ,we just did it at a seminar we had, and a few years back Tanaka Sensei was teaching it at camp with Wankan. I dont think its dropped as much as relegated to "just not done".

Do NOT think of a blue horse!! Grunners, they may well have 'dropped it from their syllabus' but what are we supposed to do 'Unlearn it!' ? And make sure you do NOT think of a black Polar bear either! Hey, I have seen black Polar Bears, they dont have showers on the tundra. WHich brings up the most Canadian question (read Manitoban) we have...why do tourists o up north to see the bears? Its cold, expensive, Dangerous and well TIS COLD MAN! The beer in Winnipeg is just as good, its not as cold....all the time, and we have buildings that are more than one story high! and the girls all have their own teeth...and dont take them out to share! GEEZ!

Jion, Jutte and Jiin are a nice series to run at the club. Actually, As mentioned we went through it at the last seminar, its a great Kata to run and lots of interesting turns and alternatives to Jions very basic and logical movements, but the arm movements are damn hard to nail down after doing 10 Jion your arms kind of do their own thing and you have to convince them not to.

The blue horse says is there anything you can learn from Jiin? The youngsters at the JKA have decided that they already know it. Do you want to miss out? He also says Wankan everyday does not make you go blind they are scared just in case it does. The blue horse has not renewed his license so I wouldn’t listen to him anyway. He does have a website www.bluehorsemedicine.com but I think he is just trying to exploit his blueness The black polar bear said underneath all polar bears are black he just got carried away with a shaver, bit cold isn’t it. Got to agree with Fleur - Sometimes Garage you are just :oSTRANGE is there toxic chemicals in your garage?

Just got back from training with Sensei Cathy Cline. We did Jiin many times in two different classes. Master Yaguchi has gone over Jiin with us a number of times over the years & now with Sensei Cline focusing on it, the kata is getting easier not to get mixed up in the manner that James mentions. Like near the end when you are in kiba dachi & the right arm is gedan barai & the left is uchi uke, when you put the left arm down to gedan barai, you really have to focus to not have the right arm go up to uchi uke.. Like the kata, to me it is like the difference in other katas `dai & sho` Kind of the same but different... Also it was mentioned that maybe the JKA has dropped it, but we are keeping it.. So, I think that I`ll just carry on!!! Paul B

Again, I have never been told that the JKA dropped it, I think it is just not done that much. I can think of a few Kata that are just relegated to "special" Katas. Hell we dont do Chinte or the Gojushiho katas to much. we do them once and a while but not that often.

Kensei - this is a question and it may be to do with how huge the Americas are, But have you lot not had a lot of regular senior instruction and constant access to it ?

Kensei - this is a question and it may be to do with how huge the Americas are, But have you lot not had a lot of regular senior instruction and constant access to it ? We do, but like fashion trends, some things simply dont hold very well. we dont do those katas because the seniors dont like doing them. We occasionally get to them, but more popular Katas seem to be the main focus. Personally I try to do all 26 Kata once a week! But I forget the ones I am not a big fan of as well.

bought A wado Kata book in a charity shop recently = very interesting to see all the same! if you have open mind! The two Wado guys I saw doing Kata seemed very much like Shotokan, done a bit sloppy. Not pokeing fun at Wado...but sure am poking fun at the guys doing it. I said to my student, if you squint real hard.....you can see the shotokan in them. The few students that came over from Wado to our club all seemed to be a bit loose and sloppy but had good kumite skills outside of using really weak punches. but they sure knew their Bunkai!

At the hieght of Karate popularity in the UK some of the BEST fighters were Wado - but just like Shotokan in the UK they had TOP Wado instructors resident here. they were VERY fast, agile and had immaculate timing - in some ways ahead of everyone else. Notably they had a lot of VERY big guys who moved very fluidly and NO DOUBT could hit very hard and fast.
