Why are Karate competitions(and I'm talking about TRADITIONAL Shotokan Karate here) never on television ?? With the amount of digital channels these days, surely a home could be found for the KUGB Annual Championships, or the JKA Championships etc ? The next KUGB's is in May. That must be enough time for the cameras to get set up (that's if there are not already there !) Is Karate ever televised in Japan ?

The thing is, Japanese people actually know very little about it!!! They know that there are different styles but that is basically about it, and due to K-1, Kyokushinkai is the first they think of. If you mention Shotokan, they won't know anything. If you say Nihon Karate Kyokai (JKA) they will nod their head, not because they know the style but because Nihon Kyokai (or Renmei) is the general designation given to many of the official bodies for different sports. So for Kendo you have the Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei, not a style but the organizing association. Same for sumo: Nihon Sumo Kyokai. I lived in a town of approx 500 000 people and only found three karate dojo. One a Chito Ryu, one a KK (at the YMCA) and the other a KWF dojo who used pics of Asai outside for advertising Here in Cape Town I can think of at least 13 different dojo within about 11 kilometres of my home......

These young guys only want MMA! If I wasn't so diversified I wouldn't have any students. We did boxing tonight. Thanks, Tom

apart from those with childrens classes I think the days of 30 - 50 in a class are well gone and unlikely to return
