My understanding is that "Heian" was a experiment that Kanazawa was playing with to merge the five Kata and make the process of ranking easier. He dropped the idea and actually took up a few Kata from other styles and "Shotokan-ized" them to make ranking and black belt levels work even harder.
I dont know if you can find them anymore. I have see Heian-O and a few others floating around that are similar concepts.

Been trawling again through old posts, are we talking here about Heian Oyo which has elements from Nidan, Sandan, Yondan and Godan? Appears to be from Sensei Kase along with Tekki Oyo which is a combination of the 3 Tekki kata. You Tube has them. Also Sensei Lecourt talks about them in his excellent interview on "The Shotokan Way" website.
Only came across seeing it on Monday when I visited Sensei Errington's Ormskirk dojo and watched them perform Heian Oyo.
Best Regards Allan

No Allan - this was seperate and predated Kase's stuff. Frank showed it to me in about 1977 - he learnt it from Kanazawa about a decade afore that.

I most sincerely hope that your post was just simply ill worded Allan - because if it is a suggestion that you doubt m word on this well mmmmm........ that would be rather unpleasant - would it not. Frank Cope, I am absolutely confident would verify the content of my Post I am sure Why don't you contact him directly?

Hi there, Sensei Cope has never taught a Kata called "Heian" in a class that I have been in (to the best of my recollection) and I joined Wirral Shotokan in 1980

Well Andy - as a stock beginner back then I doubt it woulda been an aspect of your training. Frank only ever showed it to me once. Just ask him about it when you next see him please - I am sure he'll confirm all I have no reason to make this up and merely started a thread to explore the matter - Good Grief!

Hi Andy
Many thanks for your reply, just thought that I would ask since you are at the source.
Hi Steve
Like a coiled spring eh eh (laughter), like they say in Liverpool "carm down, carm down" (more laughter). I was simply asking a question and I was not doubting that he shown you the kata. Can you remember how it was practiced? As per Andy's reply he has been training with Sensei Cope since 1980 and to his recollection he has not been shown it in any class that he has attended.
Regarding Heian Oyo (and Tekki Oyo) I have been training since 1966 and never came across this amalgamation of intergrating four kata (or three in Tekki Oyo) into one. Would appear that there is one "massive" library book out there that is either to large to convey to students during their lifetime or "pages" have inadvertantly not been passed on consistantly.
Would be interesting to know if anyone within the ESA (Sensei Steve Cattle's organisation) still practice them like John who follows the teachings of Sensei Kase.
Best Regards Allan
