I began training back in the 1970's with Randall Hassall in a JKA club. I left in the early 80's and returned in 2009. During my years away from Shotokan I trained in Aikido and Kendo. Even in your 60's it's not too late to return.

WELCOME DAVE - excellent that you donned your KarateGi again but I wouldn't state that Aikido and Kendo was a 'not training ' situation. Another here Jim Luke has also studied Aiki etc and it will be great to here how that has/will impact on your Karate approach as it has his (to the very positive I must add). look foreward to reading your points and threads. OSU! Steve H - Oh and I am the quiet shy one here (Good Grief! watch the pack gather now). LOL! Welcome Dave

I forgot to mention that I also trained for a couple of years in Shindo Muso Ryu Jodo. I did both Aikido and Jodo with Dave Lowry. Excellent writer and teacher. We have been good friends for close to 35 years.

Welcome Dave! Aikido has been a love of mine for many years now although I no longer train in the art. Karate gains many of its kumite strategies and principles from Kendo too so you have a great head start there. As for Steve being shy and retiring good grief!.... you know what? I think I will just leave that to the rest of the pack!

Hello Dave & welcome. You say that you trained with Randall Hasall the author of `Shotokan Karate It`s History & Evolution` & also I believe `Conversations With The Master`. When you say you went back in 2009, was that back with Sensei Hassall? I remember reading an article about him recovering from a heart condition, he started with Heian Shodan & grew from there. Sorry for such direct questioning, but I am quite interested.. Osu Paul B

I left Shotokan because the dojo had left the JKA. When I returned years later there was no JKA club in St.Louis and there still is no club here. As I had trained in seminars with Nishiyama in the past I went to the club that was still linked to his organisation. That was this one mokarate.com. At first I tried to contact Hassell but he did not respond to the emails from his website. Later he told me it must have been a glitch in the website or the server.

Years ago when I was a bit more easily influenced I used to get drawn into the, my org must be better than their org game. One of my Sempai who is a very talented karateka listened to me say something dumb like what really matters is the org we belong to. He corrected me quite firmly, what really matters is karate. So Dave if you found a dojo that feels right & the training if good for you, then good for you. It is great to have you back in Shotokan & of course the other experiences that you picked up along the way, will only make you better. Osu Paul B

I am no longer interested in organisations. Over the last few years I have decided that if you have a good teacher that's all you need. Politics and ego will wreck a good dojo.

While I don't care enough about organisations enough to let the lack of a JKA club here stop me from training at a different club, I still believe in the JKA. I had a chance to start a JKA club here in St.Louis with a regional contact, I decided that I did not want to be in charge of a club and just wanted to train.

you do not need to be in the JKA to practice JKA Karate (and more!)
