I've been watching a lot of 80s karate vids involving Frank Brennan and Elwyn Hall and not much modern kumite videos, was just wondering how modern karate competitions stand up compared to older ones?, i would presume a lot more safety would be involved, which would take away a lot of the better aspects of competition Karate.

Liam things have REALLY changed. i do not deny that the modern guys and gals are fast fit and very athletic BUT ( accepting accidents may occur) they are in little danger due to the rules AND MODERN h&s RULES ETC. it is now a sport whereas before - and i do not think i am alone in this opinion - having competed back then - it was A MARTIAL ART SPORT! WOULD BE INTERESTING TO HEAR DIFFERENT OPINIONS

I for one have become very disillusioned in recent times about modern tournaments. We attend our governing associations annual tournament without fail and have had to contend with, over the years, biased refereeing, cynical "diving" and feigned injury. I even had a student admonished for coming to yoi "too aggressively"! Believe me this is not sour grapes, we have had students do very well in the prelims but never placed in the final, the same two clubs always end up in the finals which would be fine if their standard was higher than everyone else's but sadly its not. I can understand not allowing strikes to the head for the very young competitors but to penalize controlled facial contact , to me, reduces the entire thing to a farce. After last year I am seriously considering pulling out. Having said that, I do want to expose my students to fair and open competition but cannot find enough open tournaments within reach to make it a regular occurrence. If there is some kind of open tournament directory on t`internet I am unable to find it. Anyone any idea how we can get back to the adrenalin fueled, high-octane tournaments of my youth and if they still exist, where?

Hmm, I don't know of any directories, but the Shobu Ippon might be worth looking up if you don't already know of it...

Going to a local AAU competition this Sunday. I can't get any of my guys to compete. Everybody wants to do MMA (like it's a new invention). It's a pipe dream. Saturday night Machida is fighting Rampage. Machida got his skills from Shotokan. I tell these guys to get out there & compete but it's no use. Hey - good things come in small packages. Thanks, Tom

Aarrgh! modern, sanitised, health and safety ridden, pointless kumite tournaments! The bleeding -heart liberals have converted it to an athletic posturing designed only for the weak of character who place the collection of trophies and trinkets above adrenalin-fueled , life-affirming FIGHTS> What have they done to my art?! ( pause for pulling out of hair a rending of clothes )> Sorry, just winds me up! No wonder mma is more popular, who would spectate at one of these fiascos

We have the AAU regional championships coming up on 3/20 & no one wants to compete. ???They keep talking about MMA. We do MMA but they are never going to compete there either. I probably could get them some amateur cage fights in ROC or IBF but they are not going to do that either. I tell them that TMA competition is better than no competition but they don't want to. It's annoying. Thanks, Tom

things have clearly changed Tom - we competed whenever we could and i remember in one year we went to 16 comps in one yr - but in those days the tournament circuit was much larger Shotokan and All Styles.
Take them to watch to try and spark an interest - you compete and win something (as you tend to) and maybe that will inspire them?
