Jim - there is no question whatsoever that ALL of Kagawa Sensie's karate is awesome BUT he is a freak in that he has a body that can just DO IT. NOW i wish to be clear that I accept totally he has worked incredibly hard and has amazing courage and spirit
BUT i actually gain more pleasure these days watching performances by Karateka that maybe haven't got the innate natural body abilities but there karate is no less beautiful and clearly 'Usable'.
there are MANY examples I could give as I am sure you could.
I have a friend in the north of England and if you saw him on the street yer would go 'He'd be NO problem to mug!' but when you see him with a KarateGi on teaching a class yer would go 'Sh*t I wouldn't wanna mess with him!' and he's a damn good cook as well! LOL! I hope yer get my point!

I'd second that, bought his DVD recently, (excellent by the way, just what I wanted BUT watching the section on him demonstrating Mawashi Geri just made me laugh out loud. If I had another 100 years to train and practiced every day (even though he's 3 years older than me) I still wouldn't be able to do what he does, however, if I can get even some of the way there, I'll be feeling really pleased with myself (high aim but realistic expectations ;D).

Beatiful! Have come back to that video over and over again since I spotted it on the tube For me, Kagawa is such a inspiration how textbook shotokan should be. Even if i never get there, it`s such a nice image to strive for. Still remember when Kagawa visited our dojo about 5 years ago, with fantastic sessions. Was so impressive to watch him with his brown rubbertube between sessions, working HARD with his kicks and punches! Inspiring, to say the least ;D

Inspiring, to say the least ;D NO QUESTION Ernst but tis a bit like saying: I have to drive to london (a 300 mile journey) Kagawa would do it simply in his superduper sports fererri. I may have to do it in a 2nd hand ford fiesta BUT we'd both get the job done and to think you CANNOT do it without a superduper sports ferrari is simple nonsense. he is the aspiration WE are the reality! OH and to be absolut3ely be clear = IAM NOT saying Ernst was speaking nonsense Kagawa's karate is (amongst others) the pinnacle we aspire to BUT we haven't failed if we do not get there - he is the 'freak' the exception' and beuatiful as it is we have to remember that or we shall never be able to productively train or TEACH! IMHO!

Nothing wrong riding a Ford, I myself have a Ford Focus Inspiration in karate comes from different sources, be it technical excellence like Kagawa, great teachers with inspirational classes or average Joe's that just keeps on training year after year, never quitting. That's what makes it so exiting for me. Small steps towards the goal, whatever that is Anyway, I just keep on training, getting inspired from all over
