I was actually studying Judo before I started Karate and in my home Town the Judo Instructor and one of his students were on the British squad. I have always tended to use a lot of throws and sweeps in my free sparring and several years into my Karate the Local Judo Instructor called in to see us with one of the National Coaches. We happened to be sparring and later when we all had a pint with them the National Coach (forgive me I cannot at the moment remember his name = Frickin Stroke! ) said to me Steve you studied Judo before Karate didn't you? I asked: 'Why do you draw such a conclusion?' he simply said: 'The way you instinctively deploy sweeps and throws!@ I was proud to tell him that i had been a judoka. he was then very interested in discussing our kicking and open hand strikes. it was a great evening with two MA's interacting and enjoying each others company.

As an Ex-Judo guy myself I never was much good at foot sweeps. I was to damn short and liked to do hip and shoulder throws in their place, easy for me to get inside and under someone!
