How many of you out there whom have studied Shotokan Karate as predominantly taught in the UK would agree - 1. you are being taught to fight Karateka and not 2. being taught to fight real street violent attackers?

Absolutley 100% true. All dojo training revolves around defending against karate techniques only. Apart from some occasional comedy self defence techniques.

I'd have to say that my dojo is very borderline... It has been progressively getting better though, as the organisation is relatively new and has taken time to sort out apparently :S

I personally feel I would have to run a separate class for real street application of Shotokan . It is wildly inappropriate to teach kids whats needed, for them we concentrate on disengagements and "legging it". my adults are all made aware of the difference between "sport" Karate and reality and whilst we used to have "beasting" sessions where anything goes, we have not run anything like this in some time. would be good to get back to it but I would have to have guaranteed numbers to make it worthwhile. Thinking about I think thats why we stopped in the first place, people stopped coming when it got rough lol.!
