in ordeer to try and get information 'in order' for a book i am writing I have been re-reading many threads on this great site.
It has made me realise what a wealth of knowledge that there is amongst the regularly contributing Members here.
I know without doubt they have helped me learn a great deal but I also have come to realise that this great site is not as well known as it SHOULD BE!
How can we help the Watts make it even more well known
ANY IDEAS?

We've both seen it before on other sites. There tends to be a core of "old boys" with a periphery of acolytes waiting to jump on anybody who questions them (much the same as "off line" karate in many places : , which is a shame as it tends to stifle honest debate and opportunities for learning. Hopefully we don't come across that way but you can understand people being cautious if they've been stung before. On the plus side, if we have a number of lurkers who keep coming back then (hopefully) they are still getting something out of it.

....also (much like myself often) not everbody has something to add to a topic. You would hope though that anybody (at any level) would feel comfortable and free to ask a question here safe in the knowledge that there "are no stupid questions". There may well be stupid answers (or just different answers/opinions) but that's where the "honest debate" comes in Every body learns, everybody wins.

But all the more reason to join in cos we are normal people = wierd, crazy, obbsessive, opinionated, friendly, kind, thoughtful, caring, argumentative, curious, changeable, passionate, enguiring, stubborn etc etc etc etc

Surely "normal" is what ever YOU (meaning ME, obviously ) are, it's just other people who are odd. Anyway, just to demonstrate my normalness, some pointless statistics (I'm not bored, honest ) 119 registered members 105 male (55% posted) 14 female (38% posted) 63 regisered members have never posted (not even to say hello) another 31 have less than 10 posts. 82.5% of posts are from just 9 members 54% of post are from just 3 members 36% from 1 member (so would we be doing this without him?) 12 members and 181 guests online in the last 24 hours (so somebody is visiting). So I suppose the upshot of the pointless list above is that we get a lot of people pass through but (despite the open and easy going nature of the forum) as Steve says, we're very much in danger of becoming a clique, which is a real shame (or is that just the nature of internet forums?). This is one of the few places I've been where people don't jump on you just for taking a contrary position, and even the "healthy" debate is good natured and you don't need to be walking on egg shells all the time. Like I said before there's a lot to be learned by just reading but how much more could you gain by joining in? If you want to have your ideas tested this is the place to do it as you won't get "flamed" just for not being "one of the boys", you may even make some new friends (be careful what you wish for ;D) How we convince people to do that however still escapes me.

One thing that occurs is that this is similar to an approach that I had from a new student who want's to come along to my local session, which is just me and my son at present. I told him that he was welcome but that he'd be the first (and only) student at the dojo but I understood if he would be uncomfortable with that ( 2 instructors, 1 beginner, could be a bit daunting) BUT he has chosen to see it for what it is, a great opportunity to be in at the ground floor and get the sort of attention he wouldn't get anywhere else (good for him!). Given the numbers above, this is a similar opportunity for anybody who wants to get involved here. A lot of knowledge and attention available and few enough posters at present not to get lost in the "mush". Has to be worth giving it a go.

Totally ECHO Bob's points above - if you have felt a little 'overwhelmed' at other forums PLEASE try here and also if you are a seasoned Karateka who felt your experience and knowledge WAS NOT listened to or welcomed elsewhere - it will be here. I can personally attest that I have learnt so much from this site and it has influenced my thinking on TRAINING and TEACHING and SELF DEFENCE and many OTHER things to a considerable positive degree. HONEST! More important though I have made and have now met or plans are in place to meet several new Karate friends =
