If this has been done elsewhere, apologies. At the moment in my own training, I am concentrating on about 10 of the kata - heian, tekki, Gankaku and Kankudai. I will obviously train other kata in class but these are for my personal training. These 10 will change depending on what my training needs are. If under OTHER, please stipulate what kata - I got lazy listing

this should be interesting Grunners. I tend to take a 'chunk' out of a specific Kata and work with it in various ways. Terry Oliver does really interesting classes where he has the students practice a 'fight sequence' and then they realise it was a Kata or part thereof! great fun!

My votes are biased to what I've been doing recently, but it varies over time.
Also spent some time recently on Junro Shodan and Nidan.

Here is perhaps a thought for a new thread (will start one) What do you want to achieve by concentrating on a certain kata and can we have a data bank for this (e.g. if you are wanting to improve balance then Gankaku may be a good choice). It would be interesting to hear different reasons for training certain kata from a technical point of view.

What is interesting to note so far is the prevalence of Nijushiho - the same number of votes as heian group and more than tekki. I know that with so small a pool it is difficult (and dangerous) to extrapolate anything from this but still interesting none the less.

I think you will find Andrew that Nijushiho has, for several decades, been a very popular competition Kata and when performed well it is beautiful to see. Also despite its admitted difficulty to do very well - it doesn't really contain any massively difficult techniques or sequences so can be easily absorbed and performed. Just my opinion on it of course.

Sorry guy's, i know i am not up to your exacting standards just yet, but i voted on only the one Kata. The one i am, as a beginner, training with now. Taikyoku Shodan. The one i am most interested in because, as the late and very great Funakoshi say's.....''Because of its simplicity the Kata is easily learned by beginners. Nevertheless, as it's name implies, this form is of the most profound character and one to which, upon mastery of the art of Karate, an expert will return to select it as the ultimate training Kata''. I cannot wait to train in other Kata's, but this is my favourite.

I do not train for competition any more, so I guess apart from trying to keep my kata sharp for teaching purposes,I try to divine the underlying principles and will often train in a particular kata for several month with this in mind. I find myself returning to Kanku-dai, Bassai dai and sho and Hangetsu as well as tekki shodan. There is generally enough material there to work with anyway. I also enjoy sochin and sometimes chinte too as it is an enigma to me.
