For over forty years now I have sought out books VHS Tapes, DVD's and Instruction.
This has been to help me not only improve my own Karate but to also help me to teach better and thus help Students improve with a heightening of attention to detail and thus very targetted improvement that is closely coupled to a reduction in injuries brought about by poor understanding of what is benificial and what is potentially negative or even injury invoking.
This quest for knowledge has often taken me into areas that, at first glance, may not seem directly related to Karate Study but upon examination clearly are.
Often this has lead me to seek out and study developments in Sports Science and this has taken me to a huge amount of relevant and very helpful information.
However, as with many 'Sciences' they often (to the laymen) become complex to the point of confusion. That is to say they lapse into 'scientific babble' that may as well be another language if you have not had the required 4 yrs at University specialising in the given subject.
All is not lost though and more recently 'Layman Friendly' publications have started to appear. At least that is what I believed!
But today, whilst supporting a Charity Car Boot Sale at a local school I purchased an absolute GEM of a book that was first published in 1984 ( ) ) some 18 yrs ago!!
It is a wonderfully detailed and illustrated, but easy to read and understand, reference work that has fantastic information about HOW our bodies are constructed and WHY they work in specific ways and WHAT you should do as an athlete to Maximise not only specific gains in your physical abilities but HOW and WHEN to do so without injury and why this is so!
It really is full of VERY useful information and despite it's original publication date it remains very current in content - simply because it deals, in a very professional manner, with how the body is constructed in Skeletal/Muscular terms and the physics that oversee the dynamics of movement etc.
Sadly, my enquiries seem to show that the book has been 'out of print' for many years and I therefore suggest you begin to scour your Library, Local 2nd hand Book shops, Charity Shops, Car Boot sales and Jumble sales to try and track down and purchase this magnificent GEM of a Book. Or maybe a member here will track down a source of supply 4 you all!
TITLE: ATHLETIC ABILITY AND THE ANATOMY OF MOTION!
AUTHOR: ROLF WIRHED
PUBLISHER: WOLFE MEDICAL PUBLICATIONS LTD
ISBN No: 0 - 7234 - 1540 - 4
I sincerely hope you are all able to track down a copy as I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you do so. Good Luck Everyone!
OH! I almost forgot to tell you: The book cost £9.99p in W.H.SMITH'S in 1984. I suspect it would be at least twice that amount know (£19.98p) if not more.
I think (read: KNOW) that I got a bargain.
My copy cost me £0.10p = YAHOO!!
OH! and a message to: Dod Watt, Bob Davis, Tom Obrien, Paul Bedard, James Luke, James James, ANDY PAXTON and others too many to mention = NO! YOU CANNOT BORROW MY COPY!! ;D ;D
