As I taught again last night at my instructors dojo...he likes teaching the kids at 70 who am I to dissagree!
I was trying to make Ippon Kumite seem a bit more real. The fact is that its a good launching pad for real kumite but it was lacking when I had four brown and black belts facing off doing Ippon Kumite and it was starting to look kind of dull...even as I yelled "MORE SPIRIT" and swung a Shinai at the floor a few times......So....I came up with a drill that worked well and everyone had a good time...took a few lumps and learned a valuable lesson.
Okay, here it is.....Instead of standing at ready stance like a zombie (adding a bit of Halloween to the post ;D) I had them stand like they would waiting for a bus, no stiffness just ready.
The attacker was not in Gidan Barrai waiting to call an attack....they were walking from side to side in front of the defender naturally, I called a target and they would "pace" or walk regularly until they wanted to attack and then they launched the attack from any angle they wanted to (limited only to a 90 degree to the next 90 degree angle if you get my meaning....full left side to full right side of the defender). The attack should be normal distance away and at that point they stepped in and attacked using the attack I designated. So, for an Oi-zuki Jodan the attacker would naturally pace from side to side on an arge or semi circle and then launch the attack when they wanted to. The defender could not look at the attacker till they launched the attack and had to use periferal vision if the attacker moved to the side.
It made it feel like a real attack for the first movement. Granted in a real attack we would be dealing with a greater number of variables but this seemed to work out better.
I then gave the instruction that they could attack with oi-zuki chudan or Mae Geri only but I would not call the target and they still got to "pace". Only one jammed finger on a front kick and a solidly absorbed punch to a girls stomach....but they had a great time dispite the several near misses and having a bit more of the unknown element. its a step towards free style that we normally did not take.
Great fun and I even joined in for a bit....but they forgot the one element that I brought to the table...Ashi barrai counters most initial attack when the old man starts his foot sweep extravaganza! ;D ;D ;D
