I found out the date for my BB grade this week, its set for January 24th so long as I maintain my training and standard.
Now starting to worry..... I currently train 2 times a week - I wish it could be more but work and other stuff get in the way - I do have time during my lunches at work to train so will increase these soon.
I've got most combinations sorted and can easily vary them as required, i'm okay with Katas and Kumite so am also fairly confident.
What advice would you give to a 1st Kyu?

not sure what org you with so don't know what syllabus you under BUT as with all gradings nerves will kick in and this can deplete energy. make sure that you have really worked on your stamina - get out and do plenty of broken rythm running etc. also on the day - listen very carefully to exactly what the grading examiner has said. the number of times I have students NOT really listen properly and then do 'their own thing' this demonstrates to me they are not truly in the zone and displaying Zanshin. On your Kumite make sure that you 'fight the guy' rather than 'spar ' with him. if you get a whack - blow it off and carry on immediately - that can be the difference tween success or failure - would be if you where sitting the exam with me! good luck.

My instructor was with the SSKA for many years and maintains the same syllabus, i've searched around the web and it seems close to many others, I think i'm at the stage of being able to adjust and adapt to any combination - although i'm sometimes left with a blank expression asking for Sensei to repeat it. I was up to half marathon level with running so will work on this, I found after a break in running that my next grading was very hard work and I was out of breath too soon!
Kumite may be a problem as there is only 1 other Brown belt adult in our small club, we kind of know what to expect from each other, one of the reasons for branching out to other clubs in the area is to improve on things like this.

Malk,
The only thing I can tell you is train like you are just having fun. Run, do some extra conditioning but Black Belt should be about skills you have over a long period of time, knowledge that you pick up along the way, not a blast of 2 months of extra hard training that gets you over a hump of some sort. If you are ready to test for black belt in your instructors eyes then you should be ready to wear one!

Thanks Steve - I will check with er-in-doors and the calendar before I do anything else. I try to find extra time near to a grading but I suspect my Sensei wouldn't have set a date if he thought I wasn't ready, there is another 1st Kyu who has not been put forward yet as he isn't training hard enough or often enough. I think I train harder to reduce my worries, the biggest question is "have I done enough?" Working extra hours and it getting darker in the evenings is making running a problem so I will have to find another way - or buy a torch.

tis simple - find a high ceiling room and learn to skip, then learn to broken rythm skip, then random impulse Skipping, then Music lead skipiing, then Pulse skipping - I guess that may do for now but you may like Weighted, endurance skipping as well? all workable for your seasonal situation and non requiring much time impact!

Now is not a good time to mention I live in an old cottage and have to duck to go through some doorways.... I will ask daughter if she has a skipping rope - or could make one - the Dining room has a slightly higher ceiling....

6 months between 1st Kyu and BB
This for me is Jan/Feb next year but my Sensei would like me to grade in December with everyone else, he is asking the AMA if this would be possible.
I guess there is a good reason for the 6 month gap....
What do you chaps think?

Test when you feel mentally ready and your instructor feels you are physically ready. Until you feel mentally ready you wont feel that you earned it, and until he feels your skills are up to his standards then you wont be technically ready!
