On Thursday another Brown belt knocked my foot during training, then tonight we did lots of freestyle - mostly with Purple/Brown belts I don't normally train with - and got bashed on the same foot again! Now sat with a swollen foot whilst taking 4 cans of pain killers....
The bunch tonight said they really enjoyed it as they have gotten to know roughly what the others are likely to do so it was a refreshing change.
I'm guessing the more seasoned Karate-Ka have a long history of bumping/breaking stuff?

Is that because of what you count as an injury though? (serious question).
Generally, what do people actually class as an injury?
These days I sort of take lumps, bumps, cuts, bruises and the occasional split lip as part of the deal and only really count anything that puts me out of training for any length of time, these are few and far between.

Generally, what do people actually class as an injury? In this case it may have prevented me training or running for a few days but I wouldn't class it as an injury. Anything that just makes you say "ooh" when you stand up is just bumps and bruises. An injury to me would be something that needs medical care, xray, bandage, sling etc. I suppose there should be a middle bit to cover sprains or anything that would prevent 100% effective movement or training but is relatively temporary.

'The Iron thinks itself needlessly tortured in the furnace but the Tempered Steel Blade looks back and know better'Karate should be a contact activity and therefore injury is an ever present possibility. the most important thing is to understand how to deal with injuries and know when to 'train through them' and when to stop and let them heal! A skill most of us have been void of at times and hence pay the consequences. Oh and Mal - if you have come to the point that the Kumite in your Dojo has lost a sense of danger and become dulled by familiarity - YOU are ALL doing it wrong. Easy to correct though!

Always suffering bumps and bruises. It's comes with the territory. And my fair share of pulled muscles and strains that can force me to stop training while being treated. These I classify as an injury because they stop me training or impair my ability to train at 100%. But touch wood I haven't broken anything yet. :-) It's all part of the journey.

Spoke too soon! Smashed my shin on somebody's elbow. Put a shin pad on. It moved during kumite & I smashed it again! Plenty of ice but the whole lower leg is black & blue! Tomorrow night just boxing, no kicking Thanks, Tom

Here's how I got around it - great work out w/ sensei steve & miguel! Front thrust kick, pi chagi, kesa gatame (scarf hold), kata gatame (arm tri), hadaka jime (naked choke), guillotine choke & grappling/ronduri! No kumite! Thanks, Tom
