ive been out of the training for ages, but while recently trying to track down my old instructors ive been geeking out on the history and divisions of karate over the years! (i never had the internet when i trained and there was only one club in my town) i was never aware of all the politics and splinters dividing associations and styles! people falling out and starting new associations, people suggesting that their org/union is better than others, and some org/unions wont train with others, some org are pro sport karate and some are against! and blah blah blah!!! Its all too much for me! i just want to train with keen & friendly people who want to improve their ability! so might start an orginasation called the KAPAKO karate association for people against karate associations) just thought id put the idea out their.

I did a Karate History lesson with Google one night, closely followed by a Karate who's what the following night - this one definitely hurt my head more than trying to work out when Karate started!
I will happily join your new "ass"ociation so long as I can automatically grade up 2 Dan levels, have people call me Master and be allowed to change everything into a new style, then proceed to tell everyone it's better....
I jest of course but it seems there are too many orgs, any politics should be left firmly outside of the Dojo!
I think i'm with you and would like to just train and learn - if I ever get to pass on anything useful to others then I will be more than pleased but would never consider pushing my ideas onto others. The ones that crack me up the most are the type that leave nasty comments against youtube video clips criticising Kata etc, it goes against the grain of the whole Karate way of thinking. (IMHO)

hmmmm, i seen what you've done there! sorry, your not welcome that defeats the object ;-) And i know exactly what ya mean by the ignorant comments left on you tube clips, i dont even acknowledge them with a reply, saw one the other day of Frank Brennan doing a disply and there was all these comment from so called mma "experts" claiming frankie would be useless in a street fight! if only they knew!

I have used Franks DVD's to compliment my training and would not like to annoy him even if I was a 7th Dan streetfighter. Anyone that can back kick quicker than I can blink deserves a bit more respect. I had to bite back when I saw a comment about Kanazawa Sensei having his foot in the wrong place on a Kata clip.

Back to politics, was chatting last night how we have soo many organisations and governing bodies to choose from and how a few conveniently don't use any of them. As i'm starting teaching soon I am after beginners and have been asked twice now if we are affiliated to anyone as they think a couple of local clubs aren't - they were affraid that if they graded with our club then it would be meaningless elsewhere. I confirmed that we were a member of a gov body and followed the Shotokan Syllabus of the JKA and that I had gone off and trained with other clubs in the area and trained exactly the same Kihon/Kata/Kumite. Back to the point..... it was feared that the Government may step in to enforce a governing body on all Martial Arts clubs/orgs/practice. A way of standardising Martial Arts and a set of rules to enforce. I can't see them spending much money on anything at the moment but wondered if you thought this could be likely?
On the plus side it might bring some order to a few clubs that have diluted Karate and hand out grades like sweets. On the negative it might make it more difficult and costly to run a club.

A way of standardising Martial Arts and a set of rules to enforce. I can't see them spending much money on anything at the moment but wondered if you thought this could be likely? I dont see it. The government may try and they will muck it up as usual! However, in Canada we have far to many styles training and even in the UK you guys have way to many styles. They would take one look at it and say it will take a decade to decode the situation, throw some money at it and give up after a few years. Its more of a mess than the long gun registry attempt here would be. I dont see it ever happening. On the plus side it might bring some order to a few clubs that have diluted Karate and hand out grades like sweets. On the negative it might make it more difficult and costly to run a club. It would be a horror show! The issue would be if a groups leadership got ahold of the power and everyone that was not in line with them would now have to go through them...and lets face it...their are a lot of bitter buggers at the top of some of these groups. Personally, I pray it never happens and dont see much purpose, use or good coming out of that.
