Do many western Dojo's have any type of shrine, any scrolls or pics of past masters? I've never been in a purpose built Dojo before, only sports centres or halls so wondering if they exist outside of Okinawa/Japan.
For most Dojo's to have them I suspect they would need to be portable and maybe not just in Japanese - to inspire beginners then they would need to understand what they meant.

we have always had some kind of "Shomen" when it comes to our clubs. In our stand alone or purpose built club we had the Canadian and Japanese flag around two big pictures of Nakayama and Funakoshi with the Dojo kun just below them.
Now that we are no longer in a purpose built club we carry a small shomen with us that is basically the same thing but much smaller.
I personally think its important to have one when you train. Reminds you of where you came from.

No such things at the leasure center on Wednesdays where we train, or the village hall on Mondays come to that, just the basic floor space really!

We promote a certain level of formality and bow to the Dojo when entering/leaving, after a while it's automatic and part of it but initially it seemed a bit daft to bow to the badmington courts.... Thought about having a focal point that we could easily transport and hang up so we could bow to that instead. It would have to be relevant, maybe something thought provoking and fairly cool to cath the eye of the kids. I've seen one club do a pop up flag but it was more a banner of the club. Just need a company to buy them from?
