Does anyone's club include these as part of your training or maybe as a talking point. Just wondering if you would ever read/learn about them unless you researched Karate yourself. I have them on our club website but was wondering if they should be gently introduced into the lessons, a lot of them would need further explaining. sites.google.com/site/mushinshotokankarate/Info

i think they definitley should be, especially to the younger karateka, and there parents should probably be made aware of them too, they should be made aware early that a dojo is not a youth club, there are alot of children at my new club who are distracted easily and chat too much, it can be tough for a sensei to find the right balance! of course you want them to enjoy their training and keep coming back every week, but at the same time they have to understand and respect the ettiquette, and remember theyre there to learn & improve, its all part of karate after all. i dont think alot of these children would have lasted at my old club as it was much more ... say regimental. but yes i think all clubs should make a point of educating their pupils on the ettiquet AND history of karate, even if its just a detailed leaflet or handout when they start to be followed up after their first grading with a discussion! anyway thats my opinion, but i would love to hear a different opinion?

Definitely. Incorporate into the class. Only 5mins (attention span and all). And only very other week. I love it when our Sensei tells the kids a little history and then the next week he will suddenly asks a random question and the kids shoot their hands in the air. And if they don't remember he just casually reinforces it. He has even made a little 10 question sheet that he gives out at grading now of things he has bought up on a regular basis since the last grading. The kids can all sit together and pool answers. The questionnaire has absolutely no impact on their grading. But it's just a way to start them thinking and retaining information. It reminds them that we are not a fitness club or a dance studio, our roots are karate and we have history and depth.

*Niju I think my club could benefit from more of it as well to be honest. There are quite a few kids who just don't have the right 'I'm here to train' attitude.

I think thats prevelent in all clubs whilst some kids are ready for karate at a young age others are not. Its the same with anything really my old boxing club was the same and so was the marching band i was in. Then again i have come accross some adults who didnt have the dedication as well.
