This Friday is our course and grading for the club, l know we can show the examiners a good standard of karate and hopefully all 16 students who are grading will be good enough in spirit and training to pass.
Both my daughter and I are going for our Purple, I hate grading as i get all tied up in the thought of it but its a nessecery evil on my journey.

I agree, and the worst part is it does not get any better. Testing for 6th Kyu or for 3rd Dan you are just as nervous, wound up and you never fall into the "God I love testing" kind of track. I love training, teaching and going to seminars...but DEAR GOD I HATE TESTING>

Good luck! Normally our students are prevented from grading if they are not considered able to pass so it sometimes can feel like a formality, so long as you don't make too many mistakes. I've sat in on our last grading to learn how the Sensei "judges", its interesting if more than a few make the same mistake that it could be down to the instruction - something i've taken on board as I have since started teaching. A lot of our judging is based on the Kata as this is the main part that the student has to do alone and its very obvious if they try to copy. I always get nervous but increase my Kata practice the week and days before the grading, trying to achieve a type of Mushin where I don't have to think too hard about the Kata. Ensure you keep up the practice of all previous Kata learnt, I assume that your grading includes Heian Godan plus any 1 or 2 of the previous Kata? Last tip - should you need any - is to be confident with loud Kiai's and fast powerful moves. Good luck to you both.

we both passed our grading last night in total three of us passed purple belt, two passed green, one passed yellow, three passed Red and four passed orange and that was with some students missing from the lower grade section of the class it was a good night for us all. We have 6 1st Q students getting ready for their Dan grading so this is a busy year for us. We followed last nights grading with our usual going for meal and a few drinks to celebrate and mix away from the dojo.

Hi Derek & congrats! Yes grading can be a nervous endeavour, however a necessary evil. They say that it`s just another training session, hard to believe.. From the looks of the info that you have given, there must be about 2 dozen people in your dojo, that is a nice number & you seem to have all the ranks covered. This is good as a certain kata does`nt get lost per say. Out of curiosity what rank is `red belt`, we don`t have have that in our org & I find it interesting to learn what others do. For example even in our org, we use purple belt for 4th kuy, but some areas use their blue belt twice.. ( 5th & 4th kyu) Again congrats on your achievement, what a nice thing to do with your daughter!!! Osu Paul B

Hi Derek & thanks for the reply! Interesting, the differences. Here is our ranking & colours. 10th kyu-white belt 9th kyu (seldom used, sometimes real young students) red belt 8th kyu-yellow belt 7th jyu-orange belt 6th kyu-green belt 5th kyu-blue belt 4th kyu-purple belt 3rd kyu-brown belt 2nd kyu-brown belt 1st kyu-brown belt
We don`t use stripes at any rank. Also of course starting shodan is black belt.
I do find it interesting the way that different orgs use the coloured belts to identify ranks.. Osu Paul B

Well done Derek and co! Your belt colours are the same as ours.
You are really lucky to have a lot of Brown belts above you to help you with your training. I'm also jealous of your social event after grading!

Malk it is good we also have roughly 10 dan grades from shodan to yondan in the club who all train regularly so its a vibrant place to train and learn. Add to this we have guest instructors every other month. I feel very lucky in my karate training.

Today is another day the class started with the usual basics to warm up then a lot of time spent on yoko-geri keage and yoko-geri kekomi. Our dojo is also a dance studio so the bars come in handy. To finish we had some endurance work with press ups, sit ups star jumps and the last stand of one hundred squats. my hips and legs are now dead lol
