Do you remember when one of your first students went for their first grading? There is a big fear from my part that I have missed something or made a mistake which will be performed by my student and they will be looking to me for teaching them wrong! The rest of my small Monday class are already on their path and the other beginners aren't quite ready yet, the one that is grades on Saturday. Oddly i've also gained a Black and Brown belt which is really nerve wracking as a junior instructor but they have come from a mixed style club and just want to learn Shotokan.

I remember the first time one of my student graded...it was a bunch of them and for the first time in months of training them I was worried that they would forget their Kata, hit eachother to much in kumite or freeze up.
In the end it was great, they enjoyed it...after the stress and I remember the pride I had in having helped them learn what they had just demonstrated. Great fun in the end...lots of stress at the start!

My experience is different than most, as I graded for my orange belt ( 7th kyu ), at the same time as 7 of my students graded for their yellow belt ( 8th kyu ). It`s a story that I`ve posted elsewhere, but I had a group ask me to train them when I was very much a beginner myself, however we badly wanted a karate club. This group kept coming back, so I had contacted Sensei Gary Johnson in Port Moody ( Vancouver ) & with his guidance & my going to train with him weekly I managed to keep us going. When we all tested I was so very nervous, as mentioned I was unranked & even though I had a varied history I was not an experienced karate-ka. It was like I hope they don`t laugh at me & my guys. As it was, it was a very encouraging experience. As far as being nervous when you students grade, there are times when that never goes away. In my small dojo, it`s whenever I have someone grading for 3rd kyu, the first brown belt or of course testing for shodan. To me the student isn`t the only one grading, so is my ability to transfer knowledge. So Mal your normal, if you get a bit apprehensive when your students grade. However it is a joy when they succeed!! Osu Paul B

Well...... she double graded on her first grade!!!
My Sensei was soo impressed that he has given his second double grading to someone in the last 4 years. He was aware that the student had picked it up really well and that I had been teaching her Heian Shodan after she got Kata Kihon so quickly. We will try and get one of the other beginners graded this month as they were busy today and not quite ready yet.
It was really good that some of the other students that I had been helping also passed well.

I've never been a fan of double grading but the 2 that I have witnessed were well deserved, both students had been practicing a lot out of the Dojo and were putting in ALL of their effort. They had not only learnt the 3 K's but had done a lot towards trying to perfect them, very refreshing when a lot of people do "just enough" in life to pass things.

A while ago when I was mid way through Kyu grades I was starting to investigate Karate more and the things that I read gave me the opinion that double grading was taking a shortcut. I had read somewhere about there being at least 3 months between grades and it being "layered" learning so you would go over everything again with each grade and gradually improve it etc. Also heard a few people say things like "you can't possibly make Black Belt within 5 years" and the like.
Now that I have read a lot more and think I am getting a good grasp on the subject (although probably still only just scratched the surface) then I'm okay with double grades, so long as they have been earnt and a dodgy club isn't giving them out like sweets.
Also when you learn that the coloured belt system hasn't always been used and some clubs add a few extra colours just to add rungs to the ladder.

Also when you learn that the coloured belt system hasn't always been used and some clubs add a few extra colours just to add rungs to the ladder. Remember that belts were a 20th century innovation, and that even in the 1950s, there were only white, brown, and black. One of the things that impressed me about Ohshima's SKA is that he still only has just those three, and doesn't go above godan (because, according to their website, that was the highest rank that was awarded while GF was still alive).
