Okay, so for some time I have been badgered, bugged and accosted by a new black belt about the "missing" or "Omited" JKA Katas.
He read some place that the JKA dropped Jiin, Wankan, Hojokachiho and Taekyoku Katas, my argument was that Jiin and Wankan just are not in the books but are still done, in fact we did Wankan at a Seminar held with Tanaka a few years back.....
The others, well I have never known Hojohachiho (SP?) and we only learned the Taikyoku (sp) a few times but its not part of any sylabus we do....
why do you think they dont do the Hojo and Taekyoku katas? I got my reasons, want to know yours.

I've never heard of the Hojokachiho kata, but for the Taikyoku katas I know I leave them out because I don't feel they really add anything. The Heian kata are fine for beginners.

Hi James, I mostly agree with Alex.
Wankan and Jiin have always been in for me. Taekyoku alway seem pointless to me. Never heard of the Hojo kata's either..
And personally I love the Heian kata's, Beginners perform the heian kata's like beginners and seniors perform the Hein's like seniors.... and that should also go for understanding the Bunkai applications/implications/prinicples...

James,
I think you probably mean Hyakuhachi-ho (Suparempei in some styles). Some old sensei still do it, but it is no longer mainline Shotokan, probably due to the fact few know it accurately.
I have heard that Jiin and Wankan are dropped from JKA syllabus, but that may be rumour. Possibly true with relation to Jiin because JKA miss the 4 last techniques off, if you compare the way Shitoryu perform it (since Itosu taught Mabuni and Funakoshi). We can assume the Shitoryu version is most likely correct. As Funakoshi did not teach it in his 15 kata, the JKA version is likely Nakayama's addition.
For what it is worth some Shoto groups still do the last 4 moves after, after the double punch in Kiba dachi - age uke and oi zuki combinations, as performed at the beginning quarter of the kata. But some central area of the kata differ to the JKA way - so who can confirm what is correct.

Oh Dear At risk of sounding patronising - Stop being 'I have to do it the JAPANESE WAY to be doing IT! Study and include ANY Kata YOU wish or dump them all as either being 1. not being essential for fighting ability Or keep them as 2. A source of so much learning if studied correctly It's your Karate - go explore!

The thing that I noticed from going into Goju Kata a bit and training in a lot of other styles is that we have what they have...if you have the right instructor or insight to pull it out you dont have to worry about missing things....also the Kata, like Steve said....do what you like.
