I want to make myself a Makiwara and would like to ask advice on the following 1, what wood do i need to use and if possible the sizes required. 2, what is better to use for the punching section, rope, padding ect.

Hi Derek, I got a makiwara from the states about 15 years ago. Despite near daily bashing its still standing! Quite expensive but the real deal and very good. Made by a Goju guy. Google "king makiwara board" and you will find them. You will need to give them a call.I highly recomend it. Otherwise go on youtube,loads of self buid stuff there. Good to hear a Shotokan Karate ka interested in makiwara. Good luck with it. All the best Simon Bligh

Rob has a good article on how to build (and use) a makiwara for your yard. If you want a floor-mounted one for indoor use, you can easily found stands sold by various MA suppliers.
