After a bit of a lay-off I am continuing my studies of Okinawan kobudo, starting with a weekend charity course in aid of R.N.I.B. I am told we will be studying tonfa v sai , sai v bo and ken jutsu. Sounds fab ! I have also been given the opportunity to take Sayoc and wondered if anyone had indulged ?

No idea what Sayoc is but teh Kobudo idea has always kind of played in my head a bit as neet. Granted I have focused alot more on just pure JKA Karate than indulging my interest in weapons, that and in Canada its really very regulated as to what weapons you can use/train in and I have really wanted to take up a grappling art again, which would limit my weapons training time.

Sayoc is practical knife fighting. I have indulged in the bladed arts before and this sounds interesting. The Okinawan philosophy of weapons is they are an extension of your unarmed combat and as such can be readily accessible to those with a grounding in karate etc. I am lucky in that my instructor is very knowledgeable and is only interested in the practical historic applications. no flashy demo-type rubbish for him. As an aside, we had a guest instructor in the shape of a professional MMA fighter giving instruction at my class tonight. Not only was he surprised how quickly my students picked it up but he enjoyed the last part of our session in which we covered kata implications. A free and frank exchange of knowledge. Lets get back to it here too?

It's great fun & interesting to try & do all types of martial arts. Here's an example of what we did tonight - Before class Misha & I did Jion a few times & then it was - Weapons out on the lawn @ The Ronin Martial Arts Club! Bo drills, kokoru shodan, nun-chucks, 3 sectional staff, military drills with broom sticks, defense against chokes & reverse punch (gyaku zuki)! Hot & humid! Whew! Lost 2 lbs. :-)
Thanks, Tom

Its this weekend Fleur, all proceeds going to the Royal National Institute for the Blind. I am really looking forward to it and am intending to take the opportunity to invite the sensei to be a guest at our club. We have a professional MMA practitioner coming to the club next week too so happy days!

It has been a hectic week so not had time to update Kobudo course. In a word Fabulous! our study for the first day was sai against bo. Ten basic set pieces practised both with the sai and empty hands. six and a half hours which seemed to fly by! Day 2 was tonfa against bo. I found this weapon much easier to use and it seemed much easier to relate empty hands . We finished with bokken against bokken, another six and a half hours. tired but inspired. Brian also managed to relate some techniques to Heian/pinan kata and we managed to spot correlations with sochin and Nijushiho. Great fun.
