So, last night I went to a juniors club and taught for him. Everyone once and a while I pick up his class and teach and let him go back to being a student for the day.
I did not want to do any "new things" because they are pretty used to the family style of karate. I wanted to go old school.
We did some line drills and then we did one step and to close out class we did some drills with partners but I demonstrated the "beast" training system. simply put....dont play tag!
We had such a good time and the class was so much fun! I have to say that I felt pretty good after the class because we pushed it and we were full of spirit and had such a basic and gruelling class.
Far to often instructors that I know of do classes that are the "new way" kind of an aerobics class with tones of kicks and punches in the air, bairly any Kumite and if their is its so Uber-respectful that they stay yards away and kind of cha Cha from a distance.
the old "beast of a class" stuff is the norm some places, but when brought back to clubs that have kind of fallen into the family way...well its fun and everyone loved it.
How many people have classes they attend when they know prety much for a fact that they will be icing some forearms for sure and maybe waiting for a fat lip to mend?

Absolutely. Currently, just one bruise on the top of my right foot, left leg from about mid shin to the bottom of the ankle is a beautiful shade of yellow and purple pretty much all the way around, left elbow is sore, (but the other guys foot hurts like hell:). The junior belts (me) are encouraged to "get in" on the black belts and, if we do get in, well, as our Sensei says, "it's the black belts fault". We are an adult only club though.

I have long quoted the "double edged" issue of being a black belt as My instructor told me...."if a white belt hits a black belt...its the black belts fault. Now if a Black belt hits a white belt...its the black belts fault!" I had an old style home work out over the week end that put me down for a day. I worked my core and legs and truely beat the heck out of myself going at it half thinking of the results of the work out and while I was left gasping and wheezing after an hour and ahalf I felt fantastic and liek I had just climbed some large mountain...but then the next day I felt as though the mountain had landed on me! Still love it and now that I can go to the bathroom with out crying...just a little...I think I am going to perform this nasty little old school work out more often!.....and prep the hot bath and A535 about half way through!

It's great to finish a lesson soaked and in some pain but tricky with mixed adult/child classes. For some of them this is probably the only true heart pumping exercise they do, I know the schools rarely push them at hard exercise so for a lot Karate can be a complete adrenaline rush.
I've gained a couple of students from another club which was heavy on the techniques and form but not the speed, i've had to gradually bring them up to speed but they are really loving it.

isnt that the best part of it though. I mean you bring in students and show them the "true old school way" and even if they are sore at the end and basically beat up a bit...they love it and come back. you have to push people sometimes to get them to that level when they are ready to push harder yet.
I love old school training, but its fewer and farther between in some schools.

My only issues with old school training is that some people can misunderstand it . i.e. some may respond to the pressure by over tensing and breathing too hard. They can then quickly become exausted and downhearted. When partenerd up, some people can become overly competitive and feel as though they must "win" rather than train.
So i think that old school is great just as long as it is tempered with instructions to relax.
A difficult balancing act though for instructors and students alike.

could not agree more. that and one persons old school is another persons "WHAT THE HELL ARE WE DOING" arse kicking and blood letting event!
Their is a fine line between pushing the class hard and pushing it over the edge!
My ideal is to get the class just past that point of comfort and push just a bit harder!
