My 13 y.o. boy is going for Shodan this weekend - not sure who is more nervous - him or me!
The Shodan grading for our club now includes Bassai Dai and all previous Kata with some (basic) applications, plenty of Kihon combinations with some new randon ones thrown in, all 5 step and 1 step Kumite, semi free style and freestyle. They will also have a brief interview and get asked a few technical and general questions. This year we are adding a few SD techniques including weapons, also a bit of wood breaking.
His spirit, speed and power have increased over the last several months and he has trained plenty so should be okay - still not as fast as me yet though ;D

Best of luck to him. Sounds like quite a syllabus. What group and examiners presiding?

Hello Mal
Always thought that Bassai Dai has been a Shodan grading kata with most organisations along with Kihon (Taikyoku Shodan), the 5 Heian and Tekki Shodan.
I can understand the introduction of SD and weapons (if that is what he wants) but wood breaking!! Stay clear of this since a 13 year old can have problems later on in life since the bones of the hand have not fully formed at this age.
Wish him well in his grading.
Best Regards Allan

Good luck with the grading, if he's put in the work then he should be fine. Don't worry about him not being as fast as you (he will be), he's still on the up and you are on the slippery slope down the other side of the hill (welcome to my world I would second the breaking comment, not a good idea for kids as the bones and joints haven't fused and the possiblity of long term damage is there (hardly worth it for what is effectively a "party trick").

Best of luck to him. Sounds like quite a syllabus. What group and examiners presiding? We're a small club and members of the AMA, we were part of a larger group and have carried on their JKA syllabus, policies etc. (even expanded on them) There will be 3 Black Belts as examiners although I will not have any input into my sons grading - might be slightly bias..... or more harsh! The AMA sometimes send someone along but only to check that we are following their guidance and not handing out belts like sweets. The wood breaking is only done with palm heel so there will be no knuckles under duress, we only use thin softwood - so long as you get the grain in the right direction it should be fine. The introduction of this is to ensure that they mentally strike "through" the target and not just hit it. Most of the training is done hitting the air or light contact so it's to ensure they can apply it properly if required. I think the main aim is to ensure that the spirit is still going strong even after they are very tired.

He passed with a good grade!
There were over 20 people grading today, all passed! There were 5 temp passes so they will need to improve but overall a very good day.
