So just how long should a pain in the chest last after a good punch from a fellow Karate-ka? I've had hits before, punches, kicks, bruises, lumps and bumps and they normally fade away after a few days. I thought it was because i'm the wrong side of 40 that it may be taking longer to heal but this pain is constant, not a huge pain, more a discomfort, but its in no hurry to clear off.
I got a good punch last Friday, I managed to get through Saturday easily enough as the high of a grading day won the day, since then it's not been fading and I have had easy teaching lessons but tonight whilst doing my own training I had to slow down. I informed my Sensei of an "injury" as we should but thought that once into the lesson adrenalin would take over. He recons it's possibly a hairline fracture as there is no major bruising or pain but because it hasn't faded yet.

A good rule of thumb is that any medical advice you get over the internet is worth exactly what you are paying for it. (The same is true for medical advice that you get from a karate instructor who isn't an MD.) Go see your doc if you have any questions.

I once saw a posh woman trying to eat ribs with a knife and fork, I had just finished and has BBQ sauce all over my face as they were massive ribs. She then lost control of one onto her lap and white dress..... ;D ;D ;D Thanks for tha advice, wether it's a bruise or slight crack it is just taking its time to fade away, if it gets worse then I will consult a doctor. I've got 2 weeks rest on holiday soon, although I did notice a local Shotokan Karate Dojo in the nearest town....

Hi Mal
Where are you going for your hols? speaking from experience I would take your dogi, visit the club and maybe watch a session, introduce yourself and enjoy the hospitality wherever it be.
I have never visited a club abroad and been subjected to a "bashing session" so to speak, they have always been a learning curve because the instructors have appreciated me taking the time out from the holiday and train with them.
Word of caution though, your travel insurance does not cover you!
Best Regards Allan

Perpignan right down the bottom near Spain, the females of the family want to go swimming in the 50m pool as they are keen swimmers, so we may co-inside this with a Karate session or two. I have some very good Frog friends so may ask them to draft an email to the club, or try sending one myself on the chance that they speak English. My Sensei returned from South America recently and trained with the locals, he even ended up taking a class when the local Sensei was took ill. It's a hope that we can bring something back with us to use in our club, with a style as vast as Shotokan there is always something to learn. ;D
